Directed by Riccardo Freda (1909-1999), this Italian / German thriller film (adapted from the Edgar Wallace novel 'The Face in the Night) stars German actress Christiane Krüger, Luciano Spadoni (who was also a set designer), Annabella Incontrera (1943-2004), Günther Stoll (1924-1977), renowned German actor Klaus Kinski (1926-1991), and American actor Sydney Chaplin (1926-2009). During the 1960's a slew of cinematic adaptations of British crime author Edgar Wallace (1875-1932) emerged from Germany, and the sub-genre known as 'Krimi' was born. Hugely influential on the subsequent Italian 'giallo' movement, these films similarly featured casts of international stars in outrageous plots, and often boasted hyper-stylized camerawork, lurid colour schemes and great soundtracks. This film feels like a passing of the torch from Germany to Italy, from Krimi to Giallo. Psychological, psychedelic, and at times just plain psychotic, the film stands as one of the most engaging and enjoyable in Freda's lengthy and diverse career.
John Alexander (Klaus Kinski) is a wealthy British businessman whose wife Helen (Margaret Lee) appears to have been killed in a car crash that was a deliberate act of sabotage. Sometime later, while he still grieves from the incident, he discovers that a mysterious young bohemian woman named Christine (Christiane Krüger) has been squatting in his home. While he is initially furious at this young lady's audacity, she manages to charm and then subsequently lure him to a party in another part of town. Once they arrive, John's entire perception of reality is thrown into doubt when Christine shows him a recently shot pornographic film which appears to feature Helen - suggesting that she is in fact alive and playing an elaborate mind game on him... Meanwhile, a Scotland Yard inspector named Stevens (Günther Stoll) is assigned to investigate the crash. He begins to harbour suspicions that John may have been responsible for his wife's death. The central mystery of the film is not the identity of the killer, but instead John's pursuit of the woman who could be his wife. This thread is well written and more than sufficient to keep the film moving - the opening flash-forward narration in the film states that the whole event has been carefully organized, which immediately makes it clear that something suspicious is going on.
Composer Nora Orlandi provides a soundtrack of pure beauty with a memorable main theme and some suitably ominous piano work. Nora held her own with some of the great Italian composers, both as a singer and writing for over thirty film scores, primarily for Spaghetti westerns and giallo films, and has been responsible for incidental music for dozens of radio advertising spots and television shows. She also often worked with the likes of Alessandro Alessandroni (1925-2017), Paolo Ormi (1936-2013) and Robby Poitevin (1926-2003). She never conducted her own music and composed without instrument, checking only afterwards on piano. An absolute must-have for Italian soundtrack connoisseurs.
