A usual winter day with overcast clouds and spots of rain. Decided to take a walk around Durham City to show the sights.
Durham, a historic city in North East England, is famous for its stunning UNESCO World Heritage Site of Durham Cathedral and Durham Castle, perched dramatically on a peninsula above the River Wear.
Historic information (brief): Founded in 995 by monks fleeing Vikings to safeguard St Cuthbert's relics, Durham became a key defensive stronghold under the Normans. William the Conqueror built the castle in 1072, and the grand Romanesque cathedral was constructed from 1093 to house St Cuthbert and Bede, symbolizing power against Scottish threats.
Top things to do:
Explore Durham Cathedral (climb the tower for views, see the stunning architecture and treasures).
Visit Durham Castle (now part university, guided tours available).
Stroll the picturesque River Wear paths, cross bridges like Prebends or Elvet, or take a river cruise/boat trip.
Wander the compact, cobbled city centre with historic streets, shops, and cafes.
Nearby highlights: Beamish Museum (open-air living history), High Force Waterfall, Raby Castle, or Hamsterley Forest for outdoors.
