EIWI twin cylinder horizontal engine.
On arrival, the engine was very noisy when running. Also, the air/steam consumption was very high, My Sil-Air 30D compressor could only run the engine for two minutes before the air tank was empty.
The following refinements addresses these two problems.
New cross-head slides, having a much greater bearing surface area and, a close running fit in the guide tubes were made. New cross-head slide wrist pins, made to a close running fit in the slides were also made. Slop in the eccentrics and con rod big end bearings was dealt with by linnishing the joint faces to a close running fit. These two refinements eliminated all of the knocks and rattles.
Both driving pistons were fitted with a single 1.5mm cross section "O" sealing ring. New spool valve pistons, honed to a very close fit in the timing chests were also made. 4mm i/d "O" sealing rings were fitted to the spool valve rod glands. These three refinements greatly reduced the air/steam consumption.
The leaky original pipework was replaced using thick-walled brass tube and cast bronze elbows. The original push-on hose tail was removed and the hole blanked off. The original out-of-scale pressure gauge was replaced with a speed regulator valve. The pipework terminated with an 1/8" BSP adapter to take an 1/8" BSP airbrush hose.
The air/steam consumption of the engine is now greatly reduced, allowing my Sil-Air 30D compressor to run the engine continuously while still operating within its duty-cycle
In the video, the engine is running at two speeds. Working speed of around 100 rpm and, idling speed. The video recording and playback is in real-time, not slo-mo.
