Description:
Kemaro Island, located in the middle of the Musi River in Palembang, holds an urban legend of true love between a Chinese prince named Tan Bun An and the princess of the Melayu Palembang Kingdom, Siti Fatimah. The story began when Tan Bun An was about to marry the princess, bringing with him a gift of seven golden jars from his country. However, for safety from pirates, the jars were covered with salted mustard greens. Regretfully without checking, Tan Bun An, disappointed because he thought the jars only contained vegetables, immediately threw them into the river. When the last jar broke on the deck of the ship and revealed the gold inside, he immediately jumped into the river to retrieve the treasure, but he never resurfaced.
Seeing her lover lost in the currents of the Musi River, Siti Fatimah, overcome with grief, decided to jump in after Tan Bun An. Before jumping, she said that if a mound of earth appeared where she sank, it would be their grave of love. Shortly afterwards, a mound of earth appeared and slowly expanded into an island, now known as Kemaro Island. The name ‘Kemaro’ itself comes from the word ‘kemarau’ (dry season), because this island is said to never sink even when the Musi River is high, as if symbolising the eternity of their love, which continues to be remembered to this day through the pagoda and temple there.
