Alī b. Abī Ṭālib (r) was the younger cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad (p). Raised in the Prophet’s household from childhood, he is regarded as one of the earliest converts to Islam. Among Sunnī Muslims, he is revered as the last of the Four Rightly Guided Caliphs, seen as paragons of Sunni orthodoxy. Shīʿī Muslims venerate him as the first Imām, while Ibādīs hold him in high esteem, despite their reservations about certain aspects of his leadership.
Given his central role in Islamic history, it may be surprising to learn that ʿAlī was once an extremely controversial figure in early Islam. In this episode of Real Talk with Terron Poole, we discuss Opposing the Imām: The Legacy of the Nawāṣib in Islamic Literature with its author, Dr. Nebil Husayn. Through an extensive investigation of Muslim writings from the 8th to 13th centuries, Husayn demonstrates how ʿAlī’s image was marginalized and "ghettoized" by significant segments of the Muslim community before being rehabilitated into the revered figure that the vast majority of Muslims recognize today.
