June, 2010. A security researcher in Belarus finds something on a client's computer.
A virus. But not just any virus.
Fifteen thousand lines of code. Four zero-day exploits. Stolen digital certificates. And one target: Iran's nuclear program.
This was Stuxnet. The world's first digital weapon.
It infected thousands of computers across five countries. But it was only looking for one thing: Siemens software controlling centrifuges at Iran's Natanz facility.
When it found them, it made them spin faster... then slower... destroying themselves. While telling the operators everything was fine.
From 2009 to 2010, Iran lost years of nuclear progress. Thousands of centrifuges destroyed. And they had no idea why.
Until a coding error made Stuxnet spread beyond its target. That's how the world found out.
The sophistication pointed to nation-states. The New York Times later confirmed: a joint operation between the NSA, CIA, and Israeli intelligence. Code-named "Olympic Games."
It worked. But it also opened Pandora's box. Stuxnet became a blueprint for cyber warfare. Now every nation has digital weapons.
The genie is out of the bottle.
