Congratulations you’re engaged! This is Ahmad from Knight image Photography, your Newmarket wedding photographer. In this video, I’ll detail exactly how you book your civil ceremony in the Town of Newmarket and York Region.


Now, what’s unique about planning a civil ceremony in Newmarket is that the town has it’s own efficient that are able to perform your wedding service within the municipal building, or anywhere within York Region.


So, if you’re not interested in a Big Fat Greek Wedding, this is a great option for you. I spoke about this in a previous video and you can find the link in the details below.

Now, even after releasing that video I still received a lot of questions about how to plan a civil ceremony, which is why I decided to make this video, to explain the process if you’re planning a civil ceremony.


A quick disclaimer, it is very possible that your town does not offer wedding ceremony services and this video will speak specifically to couples looking to book a civil ceremony within Newmarket. That being said, you may still find the content of this video very useful.

So let’s get into this!





Step One: Fill Out a Marriage License

As an alternative, you can also go into Newmarket Municipal Building on Mulock Drive to receive a hard copy of that application form.


Step Two: Bring the Completed Form to 395 Mulock Drive
Take that form into the Newmarket Town Hall at 395 Mulock Drive in Newmarket. When you go into the town hall you will want to bring in two forms of identification for you and your partner. This can be a Drivers License, a Passport and or a Birth Certificate.


Now keep in mind only one of you will need to be present at Town Hall with the completed application form this time. But be sure you have your two pieces of identification and your partners' two pieces of identification. You are going to need those.

If either you or your partner was in previous relationships that ended in divorce, you must present the certificate of divorce at this time.


The cost of the license is $147.00 and they accept Visa, MasterCard, Amex, and Cash. Keep in mind the license is only valid for three months, so to avoid paying $147.00 and applying again, you’ll want to get married within that time.


Step Three: Choose a Date and Location for Your Ceremony
Whether you’re having your ceremony on-site within the municipal building or offsite within York Region, you can book a date with the clerk with then and there.


Step Four: Meet With the Town Wedding Officiant
Legislative services will contact one of their in house wedding officiants who will then reach out to you to set up a pre-ceremony meeting. You can expect this meeting to last approximately 30 minutes and it’s very important that both you and your partner are present. The officiant will walk you through the process and answer any questions you might have. As well, they will be able to customize your ceremony to you and your partners' needs and wishes.

You will also want to give the wedding officiant the marriage license at this time.


Step Five: Get Married


Step Six: Apply for a Marriage Certificate

Now what? You need proof that you’re married. 10-12 weeks after your ceremony you’ll want to apply for a Marriage Certificate. This is proof that the two of you actually got married! This can be done directly through Service Ontario.
