🛑 Localized otitis externa (furunculosis):
1) caused by staph
2) occurs only in outer third of External auditory canal
3) Diabetes is a predisposing factor
4) its discharge is scanty , purulent & cheesy (we can use mnemonic "Franc is a virulent guy" to remember it)
5) patient comes with tender tragus & pain on mastication
6) No ear wash as it spreads the infection

🛑 Malignant otitis externa:
1) causative organism is pseudomonas
2) there is necrotizing otitis externa + skull base osteomyelitis
3) Treatment by Quinolones as Ciprofloxacin

🛑 Fungal otitis externa (otomycosis)
1) caused by Aspergillus Niger + Candida albicans
2) it causes fungal mass like a wet newspaper (white mass + black spots)
3) Diabetes can also be a predisposing factor

🛑Ear wash is contraindicated in:
1) perforation
2) vegetable foreign body in EAC
3) otitis externa (bacterial / viral)

🛑Manifestations of tympanic membrane rupture during ear wash:
1) sudden pain
2) bleeding
3) deafness + tinnitus
4) Fluid trickling in the throat
