China’s construction of the world’s largest hydropower dam on the lower reaches of the Yarlung Tsangpo river in occupied Tibet raises significant concerns for India’s north-eastern region. The project, capable of generating three times the energy of the Three Gorges Dam, is being promoted by Beijing as a "safe project" supporting ecological protection and climate neutrality goals. However, the potential consequences for downstream nations—particularly India and Bangladesh—are far-reaching, with critical implications for the environment, economy, agriculture, and regional stability.
The north-eastern states of India, such as Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, are particularly vulnerable to the dam’s impact on the Brahmaputra River’s flow, which originates as the Yarlung Tsangpo. Strategic concerns are also heightened by the possibility of the dam being used as a geopolitical tool or even a military weapon to manipulate water resources.
