BOTANY CABINET
(In this video I use the material from
Nienhuis Montessori USA)
Material:
A cabinet with 3 drawers that contain a total of 14 leaf shape insets and frames.
An orange stick.
Botany Cabinet Cards
3 series of 14 cards that correspond to the leaf shapes contained in the botany cabinet. In the first series the forms are filled in, the second series contains thick outlines of each shape, and the third series has a thin outline of each shape.
Presentation:
Invite the child to the botany cabinet
Introduce the activity
Have the child to bring the first drawer (with three contrasting shapes) and sit down
Take the orange stick from the drawer
Place it on your dominant hand like a pencil
Take one inset, tilted it 450 with the green side on the child
Start from the bottom, tracing it continuously, clockwise, trace it several times, at least times
Place the inset on tray on an empty space
Hold the frame and trace it counter clockwise several times at least three times, emphasize that we do not touch the green side
Put the inset back
Trace one more shape at the same manner
Invite the child to trace the third one
Invite him to do as many times as he wants to
When he’s done, have him put the tray back
Following Exercise
When the child finish with one drawer , invite him to work with any drawer one at the time
Work with 2 drawers at a time

Following Exercise:
Invite the child to explore the leaves of plants in the outside and inside the environment
Put the shape on a tray and invite the child to go outside
Invite the child to classify the plants according to the leaves shape :
Take sample of a leave and classify the leaves
Make a booklet
Help the child to relate the shapes with the real plants
Make a booklet of the shapes from colored paper, punch a green paper to a leave’s shape and glue on to yellow paper (offer the child this activity only if he interested)
Language:
Drawer 1: Orbiculate, linear and deltoid.
Drawer 2: Ovate, lanceolate, elliptical, obovate, reniform and spatulate.
Drawer 3: Cordate, hastate, sagittate, obcordate and acerose or acicular
