📹 Video Guide Overview
This tutorial provides a step-by-step walkthrough for safely and properly running a wire through the firewall grommet of a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 RST Z71 equipped with the Duramax 3.0L Diesel Engine. Whether you're installing LED light accessories, a dedicated power line for an amplifier, or a subwoofer, this guide ensures you're working with the right access points and techniques.
🛠️ Important Note:
Unlike other Silverado variants, this specific model does not feature factory nipples on either of the firewall grommets located in the engine bay—driver or passenger side. Instead, there is a factory nipple located inside the cabin, which can be safely used to route a power cable between the cabin and engine bay.
By following this guide, you'll avoid unnecessary drilling, preserve OEM integrity, and ensure a clean, professional install for your aftermarket accessories.
🧰 Tools & Safety Gear Needed
Before you begin running a wire through the firewall of your 2024 Chevy Silverado 1500 RST Z71 Duramax Diesel, make sure you have the following tools and safety gear ready:
Snip – for making a small cut in the cabin-side nipple
Straight Pick – to puncture the rubber grommet cleanly
Dielectric Grease or Non-Petroleum Lubricant – eases cable pull-through without damaging rubber
Fish Tape Wire or Wire Hanger – I used one from a dry cleaner, straightened for the job
Gloves & Safety Glasses – protect your hands and eyes during tight maneuvers
Flashlight & Work Lamp – for visibility inside the engine bay and cabin
Basic Automotive Tools – ratchet, screwdrivers, Torx bits, pliers, etc.
Trim Removal Tool – needed to remove the front passenger side door sill garnish molding
Electrical Tape – for bundling and protecting wire ends
Wire Loom – to shield and organize your cable for a clean, professional finish
🔧 Preparation & Initial Tasks
Follow these steps to safely prep your *2024 Chevy Silverado 1500 RST Z71 Duramax Diesel* for firewall wire routing:
*Step 1:*
Remove the passenger side floor mat and slide the seat all the way back for better access.
*Step 2:*
Using a trim removal tool, carefully detach the passenger side door sill garnish molding.
*Step 3:*
Locate the *Power Supply Converter* just below the glove compartment.
⚠️ Do not disconnect the wiring.
Lift the two latches securing the converter, then gently pull to dislodge it from its bracket.
Use a *10mm deep socket wrench* to remove the top and bottom nuts holding the bracket to the firewall.
*Step 4:*
Find the rubber grommet and locate the *nipple* protruding from the bottom.
*Step 5:*
Open the engine hood and remove the **passenger side front fender liner**.
This step requires patience — you'll need to remove multiple **Torx screws**, **plastic retainers**, and **one 10mm bolt**.
Once removed, you'll have clear access to the engine bay grommet without reaching over the engine.
*Step 6 (Optional):*
Inside the cabin, use a *snip cutter* to trim half the nipple and expose the grommet.
Alternatively, use a *straight pick* to puncture the rubber slowly, keeping the tool level to avoid damaging existing wires.
*Step 7:*
Insert *fish tape* or a *wire hanger* through the grommet, pushing about 4–5 inches while keeping it level.
Check the fender side to confirm the wire has emerged.
*Step 8:*
Secure your wire — in this video, I used *16AWG stranded automotive wire* and ran two lines for future accessory installs.
