The 2nd December 2021 marks 50 years of the UAE’s unification into an independent sovereign nation. This period has seen the UAE transform from one of the world’s least developed nations into a global commerce hub and the first Arab nation to send a space probe to Mars.
This transformation was not achieved without facing challenges. The UAE’s region, the Middle East, has been locked into multiple decades-long conflicts that have generated severe instability and stalled economic and social progress.
The UAE’s approach to foreign policy aims to move forward from the past, end the underlying causes of conflicts and reshape the region into one based on stability, security and peace. This new approach can be seen foremost in the UAE’s championship of the Abraham Accords which ended 50 years of antagonistic relations between the UAE and Israel and resulted in an immediate shift towards normalisation in the region.
Please watch H.E. Abdulla Al Subousi, Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates as he presents: 'Toward the Next 50 Years', the UAE’s plans for the next chapter in its economic and social development and the UAE-Australia relationship.
Prior to his current assignment, Ambassador Subousi was the Consul General of the United Arab Emirates in Los Angeles covering the West Coast.
Before that he was the Director of the American and Pacific Affairs Section, holding a title of Ambassador at the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International.
Ambassador Subousi has a distinguished service record over the past 20 years. He served two tours in the UAE Embassy in Washington, D.C. where he was Director of Congressional Affairs before being appointed Consul and Head of Legal Affairs; he ended his tour in Washington as Head of the Political Section.
Prior to that, Ambassador Subousi worked at the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs as Chief of the European Union desk and was involved in the European Union – Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) free trade negotiations. He also was a member of the UAE official delegation to the United Nations General Assembly Millennium Session in New York. He led, and was a member of numerous UAE delegations to several regional and international conferences.
Ambassador Subousi graduated from the University of Minnesota with a double major in Political Science and International Relations with a minor in History. He also attended courses at the National Defence University and Brookings Institute. In 2019 he received an award for the best diplomatic mission from the UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and the award of distinguished diplomat from the UAE Foreign Ministry.
