After an argument with her husband, Elizabeth (Claire Foy) goes to Balmoral alone. Meanwhile, across town, Macmillan (Anton Lesser) attends a performance of Beyond The Fringe, which does him no favors, although he seems to enjoy it at first — until the performers notice him in the audience and mock him directly to his face. At the same time, Stephen Ward (Richard Lintern), a society osteopath, nearly incites a riot when he is brought in for his trial and receives a harsh lecture from the prosecutors — a turn of events that proves devastating, as he commits suicide before the jury returns a verdict.
