Rack-and-Pinion Mechanism – The gearset that converts the steering wheel’s rotational motion into the linear motion needed to turn the wheels.
Hydraulic Actuator – A device that uses pressurized hydraulic fluid to assist steering effort.
Electrohydraulic System – A hybrid system where an electric motor drives the hydraulic pump, improving efficiency compared to traditional belt-driven pumps.
Torque Sensor – A sensor that detects the driver’s input torque on the steering wheel to determine the level of power assistance required.
Variable Assist Steering – A system that adjusts the level of steering assistance based on speed or driving conditions (lighter at low speed, firmer at high speed).
Steering Gearbox – The mechanical housing containing gears that transfer motion and force from the steering wheel to the wheels.
Pinion Shaft – The small gear connected to the steering wheel shaft that meshes with the rack in rack-and-pinion steering.
Hydraulic Control Valve – A valve that directs hydraulic fluid to either side of the piston in a hydraulic steering system, depending on steering input.
Electric Power Steering (EPS) – A modern system where an electric motor provides steering assistance, replacing hydraulic components.
Steering Column Intermediate Shaft – A link between the steering column and the steering gear, often including joints that allow flexibility and precise torque transfer.
