In today’s video, I’m breaking down how I retouch and refine chunky highlights, turning grown out blonde into a clean, dimensional burgundy + blonde blend!

This is a strategic retouch designed to:
• Avoid banding
• Protect virgin dark hair
• Lift evenly and cleanly
• Soften harsh lines without losing bold placement

In this step-by-step tutorial, you’ll see:

• How I take very fine sections in small foils for a controlled retouch
• Why chunky highlights that grow out too far can’t be treated like a standard retouch
• My approach to preventing overlap and breakage
• Pre-toning with gloss toners before applying vivid overlays
• How I balance burgundy depth with bright blonde contrast and don’t stain my blonde!

In this video first I retouched the blonde using very fine sections in small foils because:

1️⃣ It had grown out too much for a standard retouch without risking banding.
2️⃣ Finer sections allow for more even lift.
3️⃣ It keeps the lightener cleanly off her virgin dark hair.

After lifting, I pre-toned using Danger Jones gloss toners in 10-32 to create a clean base before finishing with the semi-permanent vivid overlays.

The result?
Dimensional, blended chunky highlights that feel intentional no matter how it’s styled! And a baby raccoon tail.. 🥹
