Christina Amphlett was born on October 25, 1959, in the Victorian coastal city of Geelong. But this wasn’t a child content to play in the backyard. By 14, she was in trouble with authority. She ran away from home, lived on the streets, and was eventually arrested for busking in Spain. She would later claim she never chose music—it chose her. She was all instinct. She didn’t have vocal training, didn’t follow rules. What she had was electricity running through her veins, and when she sang, it came out as pure voltage.

In Sydney in 1980, she met guitarist Mark McEntee. Their creative connection was instant—so was the chaos. From that moment, Divinyls was born. With Amphlett’s savage charisma and McEntee’s jagged guitar work, the band fused glam, punk, and pop into something uniquely Australian and unmistakably theirs.
