Weeks ago I filled a jar with water and mud from a rain puddle. I added nothing else and sealed it for over 15 days. When I opened it, I found an entire ecosystem. Aquatic beetles breathe using an air bubble trapped under their wings. Copepods carry eggs until they hatch. Rotifers form microscopic clouds of life. Vorticella colonies cover surfaces and compete for space. Predatory larvae hunt smaller organisms, maintaining the balance of this tiny world.

This experiment reveals how nature organizes itself even in confined spaces. Every species plays a role—some as prey, others as predators. The ecosystem survives through constant interaction. When the original puddle dried up, this jar became a small window into a world that no longer exists outside.
