Aging parents are really good at telling us what we want to hear.
“I’m fine.”
“Everything’s great.”
“There’s nothing to worry about.”
But just because they say they’re okay doesn’t mean they actually are.
They don’t want to worry you, lose their independence, or admit that everyday tasks are getting harder.
Meanwhile, you’re busy juggling your own life, work, and family, hoping they would tell you if something is wrong.
Here’s what they won’t say:
⚠️ “I skipped my meds again because I forgot to refill them.”
⚠️ “I fell last week, but I didn’t want to tell you.”
⚠️ “I don’t cook much anymore because it’s too much effort.”
⚠️ “I feel lonely, but I don’t want to ask for help.”
⚠️ “I get overwhelmed by bills and paperwork, but I pretend I have it under control.”
So what does this mean for you?
Waiting for them to ask for help isn’t a plan. You need to look for the signs they aren’t saying out loud.
✔️ Check their fridge, is there fresh food or just expired leftovers?
✔️ Look for missed doctor’s appointments or unpaid bills.
✔️ Pay attention to their energy, are they more withdrawn or confused?
✔️ Ask direct questions (instead of “How are you?” try “What did you have for dinner last night?”).
If you’re noticing red flags, start the conversation and your research now, before you have to make a quick decision when something happens.
If any of this sounds familiar, you’ve found the right place. 💛
