Malvina Reynolds was a prolific songwriter, who wrote about various socially significant topics, especially the environment. She is said to have written a song every day before breakfast. Many of her songs were sung, and popularised, by Pete Seeger, probably the best known example being "Little Boxes".
Malvina co-wrote this one with Alan Greene, and it was popularised by Harry Belafonte, who apparently insisted on some changes before he agreed to record it, in particular the addition of the chorus. In the original song, for example, it was "sunsuits and petticoats," rather than "dirndls and petticoats." Belafonte argued that you don't wear petticoats with sunsuits. Malvina's response was that she wasn't thinking of wearing; she was thinking of ironing!
Apparently the original version was about a boy as well as a girl, so it is quite legitimate to sing a male version of the song. I recorded this video over a year ago for a slide presentation at a graduation. I'm not sure whether it was actually used as the person who requested it did not get back to me about it, but I thought it was about time I put up the video I sent her.
Though many other artists have recorded the female version of the song none achieved the success of Belafonte's rendition. Unfortunately the videos of Malvina Reynolds singing the song and the Kodak advertisement that also helped to make the song popular are no longer available on YouTube.
Lyrics and chords:
..... C ................ Em ......... F ........... G7
Where are you going, my little one, little one?
.... Am .............. Em .......... F .......... G7
Where are you going, my baby, my own?
........... C .......................................... F ....................... Fm
Turn around and you're two, turn around and you're four.
........... C ........................... Dm .................... G7 ............ C
Turn around and you're a young boy going out of my door.
Turn around, turn around.
........... F ........................... Em .................... F .. C . G7 C
Turn around and you're a young boy going out of my door.
Where are you going, my little one, little one
Knickers and dungarees, where have you gone?
Turn around and you're tiny, turn around and you're grown.
Turn around and you're a young man with a family of your own.
Turn around, turn around,
Turn around and you're a young man with a family of your own.
Where are you going, my little one, little one
Blue jeans and cowboy boots, where have you gone?
Turn around and you're tiny, turn around and you're grown
Turn around and you're a young man with babes of your own.
Turn around, turn around,
Turn around and you're a young man with babes of your own.
