The group was founded in 1961 and was the oldest surviving rock band in the Netherlands at the time of its disbandment in 2021. At that time, it was also one of the longest existing bands in the world. Golden Earring has had international success with the hits Radar Love, Twilight Zone and When the Lady Smiles, and their albums Moontan and Cut. Golden Earring is one of the few Dutch bands to have had international success. The band has sold millions of albums worldwide and enjoyed international star status in the seventies and eighties of the twentieth century, especially in the United States. Golden Earring has more than thirty gold and platinum albums. The band was in the Dutch Top 40 for a total of 389 weeks, making it the most successful Dutch band in that list. In the Single Top 100 and predecessors, the group has achieved 60 hits.
With five charts in the American Billboard Hot 100, Golden Earring is the most successful Dutch act in America, with Twilight Zone they even achieved a number 1 hit in the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks in 1982. In total, six singles and eight albums ended up in Billboard's leading charts. The band made ten extensive tours of North America and five of Great Britain. They also toured frequently on the continent of Europe, especially in Germany, where the group last toured in 1990–1991, and then performed irregularly. Golden Earring was one of the world's oldest rock bands.

The last line-up was active non-stop between 1970 and 2021, an almost unique fact in the international rock world. In 2009 Golden Earring made its comeback in England with concerts in Ipswich and London. In the summer of 2011, the band's latest album was recorded live in London, with producer Chris Kimsey.

In February 2021 the band confirmed that Golden Earring founder singer and lead guitarist George Kooymans, was diagnosed with the ALS desease. The group decided to stop performing.
Kooymans died July 23, 2025.
Golden Earrin performed at the very first Pinkpop edition in 1969. Actually, the roster of bands on that festival played on Golden Earring's equipment.
The band also performed at the 1977, 2005 and 2019 editions.
This 2005 performance is dedicated to George Kooymans.
