It’s been a long time coming but here were are in Huntington. This one is the largest in York, and was at one time even larger. Huntington nowadays refers to an old village on the Eastern bank of the River Foss, as well as the plethora of new developments around it, but historically Huntington included land on the Western bank of the river.

The parish also included Towthorpe and Earswick village as well. Huntington itself remained a small farming community for centuries, until in the later part of the 1800s, rapid expansion began, coinciding with the development of the New Earswick model village and the opening of the Queen Elizabeth Barracks at Strensall. Rehousing schemes during the 1930s sped up the growth of the village even further and turned Huntington into a massive suburban area of York.

Its stayed that way since, and whilst the original Huntington village is still clearly distinguishable, its fair to say its swamped by new development. Huntington parish includes a lot of land to the South and East of the original village. Built on it are two major out of town retail parks, and a brand new stadium, leisure centre and cinema complex, all linked to the city’s via its park and ride services.
