In this video, I take on one of my most challenging smart-home projects yet: reverse engineering a proprietary sub-GHz fireplace remote.
After discovering that the official app and voice assistant integrations wouldn’t work with Home Assistant, I set out to decode the RF signal myself — starting with SDR captures, analyzing the protocol in Universal Radio Hacker, and uncovering why tools like the Flipper Zero initially failed.
The end result is a fully local, cloud-free fireplace controller that works seamlessly with my smart home — without relying on the original remote or proprietary apps.
