"Doctors love to make things sound scarier than they are," Dad said with a dismissive wave. "Keeps the money flowing, right?"
I scheduled the surgery for the following Tuesday and drove my parents back to their house in silence. As I pulled into their driveway, Mom turned to me with that familiar look of maternal concern that somehow always felt more like judgment.
"Honey, we've been talking, and we really think you should get a second opinion. Maybe even a third. This whole brain surgery thing just seems so... extreme."
