This is a summary of Asian Pathfinders' session on "India’s Foreign Assistance to Africa - Quantifications and Motivations" by Chirayu Thakkar (Visiting Fellow, The Stimson Center, Washington DC). As this is part of the speaker's ongoing research with University of Cambridge, the entire video will be made public after the research is published.
India has been listed as an emerging donor for over two decades Nevertheless, academic and policy circles lack a comprehensive view of the outflow of foreign assistance and the motives behind it This project, for the first time, tabulates and quantifies all foreign assistance flowing to Africa and through empirical analysis, attempts to identify what factors attract Indian assistance to Africa.
Chirayu Thakkar is a Visiting Fellow at The Stimson Center, Washington DC He is also working for the Margaret Anstee Center, University of Cambridge as an independent researcher on India's foreign aid in Africa Earlier, he read a graduate degree in Modern South Asian Studies from the University of Oxford.
