Winter AT Hiking in LUNA Sandals - Osos, Wool Yubi Socks, + Tabu 2.0s

Описание: We try pairing LUNA's Oso Sandals, Yubi Socks, and Tabu 2.0s for winter hiking on the Appalachian Trail in snow and freezing rain.

We stubbornly try to make LUNAs work for us for multi-day winter hiking on the Appalachian Trail, where temperatures can dip down to the teens (F), and we might find snow and freezing rain. These conditions are different than going out for a run or a day hike as we don't get inside for several days to dry off and warm up.

Observations:
Luna Osos (Middle Bear Retro version):
We like these for winter because the tread is grippy on muddy ground and snow. We found the Middle Bears still flex a little when cold or frozen and provide adequate ground insulation, where the regular (thicker) Osos get a little stiff
Snow likes to work it's way between the foot and sandal foot bed

LUNA Wool YUBI Tabi Socks:
We found these warm down to about 40° F if wet or dry. If wet and below 40° F, our feet got cold quick as the moisture sucked the heat away from our feet
Found they are much easier to put on than "toe socks"
More durable than out other toe/tabi socks
Take a long time to dry

LUNA Tabu 2.0 (sort of booties):
When worn over the YUBI socks, the Tabu 2.0s kept us comfortable down to about 25° F when dry. If walking in rain or snow all day, the Tabus wetted-out and our feet got real cold in temps below 35° F
Dry pretty quick
Good camp shoes

We've decided that if we'll get wet and temps are below 35° F, our best "barefoot style" alternative is wearing "sock shoes" over a waterproof sock and wool sock. If we could find a waterproof "split-toe" tabi sock, we would still wear our Lunas during the winter on the AT. We've tried neoprene booties, but they still wet-out and our feet freeze. Of course we could just wear shoes, but that just doesn't feel the same.
