SPECTRA, Scotland’s festival of light, returned to sites across Aberdeen City from 10th to 13th February 2022. This involved a number of new immersive commissions, multidisciplinary collaborations and premieres, lighting up the dark winter nights. Many featured quiet soundscapes but here we have used a composition from renowned local musician Paul Anderson called 'Sithean Mor' from his recent album 'In the Footsteps of Colm Cille'.
The artworks included TOGETHER by Lucid Creates, a spectacular, large-scale art installation filled with video, light, sound and reflection, from three giant suspended rings. This was also used by the Fusion Youth Dance Company, for their 'Together They Dance' displays during the event.
Inside the Music Hall and Art Gallery were 'Museum of the Moon' and 'Gaia' by UK artist Luke Jerram. Measuring seven metres in diameter, these giant moon and earth globes featured 120dpi detailed imagery of the planets, floating in three-dimensions.
Marischal College facade was brought to life by 'Six Frames', a playful interpretation of six stanzas from Sheena Blackhall’s poem Twa Brigs Bussie created by Illuminos. Next to this was 'Trumpet Flowers' by Amigo and Amigo. An immersive jungle of light, colour and sound with interactive keys that allowed people to play each flower as a towering musical & light instrument. Finally there is Hypercube by Travelling Light Circus, which is like an infinity mirror, but in 3 dimensions. With over 2,500 high density, high intensity LEDs between 6 perfectly engineered faces of a giant cube, this is possibly the biggest Hypercube in the world.
