Today we're going to be taking a look at the Heininger HitchMate TruckStep XL Extendable Hitch Mount Step, Part Number: HE4037. This HitchMate XL TruckStep allows you to gain easy access to cargo on the back of your truck bed. It extends fully out from the center of the hitch pin hole roughly 21", giving you an 8" x 11" step. It can be adjusted in to accommodate your application and when not in use the whole step folds up for compact storage. Simply pull back on the step, rotate it up, pull the pin on the side, and you've got it. This is the position you want it in when you're on the road. Here underneath you can see how the HitchMate's not coming in contact with anything underneath the vehicle, but it could vary depending on what vehicle you're going to use it with so we're going to go over a couple of measurements.

From the center of the hitch pin hole to down to the top of the shank we're looking at about 4-1/2". From the center of the hitch pin hole to the end of the shank, we're looking at about 25-1/2". From the center of the hitch pin hole down to the bottom of the step, we're looking at a ground clearance of around 9" down to the bottom. With my tailgate down and my HitchMate step fully extended, let's go ahead and grab some more measurements. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the outside of my HitchMate step is about 29-1/2". The step itself has a 500 pound weight capacity.

It has a non-slip, molded surface with grips so you can insure you're going to get the best grip possible in all weather conditions. You can also use it to get better access to the roof of your SUV or if you have a front mounted hitch, you could use it to gain easier access under the hood. Now that we've gone over the features, I'll go ahead and show you how to get it installed. This is going to be for your 2" x 2" receiver. We've got two 5/8th pin holes here, 2-1/2" center on center apart. You just want to choose whichever one works best for your application.

We've got our step folded up in the storage position. Let's go ahead and load our shank up into the receiver. We're going to go with the second pin hole here so we'll line up our pin holes. That looks pretty good. Then we'll take our included anti-rattle bolt and thread that through.

The nice thing about this anti-rattle bolt is it's going to help reduce some of the play and the rattle within our receiver and our HitchMate. We've got a lot of play there without it being tightened up, so let's go ahead and snug that up. I'm using my 23 mm socket here. Now that we've got it nice and tight, give it a nice shake, and you can see most of the play is gone.
