Stella Maris Monastery, situated on the slopes of Mount Carmel in Haifa, is a prominent religious and historical site associated with the Carmelite Order. The monastery, as it stands today, was completed in 1836 and serves as the world headquarters of the Discalced Carmelites. Its origins date back to 1631, when the order sought to establish a presence on Mount Carmel, a place rich in biblical history and spiritual significance, particularly its association with the prophet Elijah.

The monastery is located above a grotto traditionally believed to be a cave where Elijah sought refuge. This connection to Elijah makes Stella Maris a significant pilgrimage destination for Christians, Muslims, and Druze, who all revere the prophet. The main church of the monastery is adorned with a stunning dome, painted with vibrant biblical scenes, including depictions of Elijah, Mary, and Carmelite saints. A prominent feature of the church is the statue of the Virgin Mary holding Jesus and the Scapular, known as Our Lady of Mount Carmel or Our Lady of the Scapular. This statue is a focal point of devotion and a symbol of the Carmelite Order.

Throughout its history, the monastery has faced challenges, including destruction and rebuilding. During the late 18th century, it suffered damage at the hands of local rulers. In the early 19th century, Napoleon Bonaparte's troops occupied the monastery, using it as a hospital and barracks. Despite these adversities, the Carmelite community persisted in maintaining their spiritual mission on Mount Carmel.

Stella Maris is also known for its role in a major annual Catholic event. On the first Sunday after Easter, a grand procession takes place, starting in downtown Haifa and culminating at the monastery. This tradition commemorates the return of the statue of Our Lady of the Scapular to the monastery after World War I, symbolizing the restoration of peace and faith.

Today, Stella Maris Monastery stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Carmelite Order and its connection to Mount Carmel. It attracts pilgrims and visitors from around the world who seek spiritual solace, historical insight, and the breathtaking views of Haifa and the Mediterranean Sea from its location. The site remains a vibrant center of worship, devotion, and Carmelite spirituality.
