Rook Flipping Stones | WWT SlimbridgeI
Watch the incredible problem-solving skills of a Rook (Corvus frugilegus) filmed right in front of the Rushy Hide at WWT Slimbridge. While many visitors focus on the swans and pintails, this clever member of the corvid family was busy "turning over every stone" in search of a meal.
Using the Canon EOS R7 and the RF 200-800mm, we get a pin-sharp look at its distinctive pale, featherless face and powerful beak. The 1.6x crop of the R7 allows us to keep a respectful distance while capturing every subtle movement as it hunts for invertebrates beneath the pebbles.
Interesting Fact: Rooks are among the most intelligent birds on the planet. Research has shown they can use tools and even understand basic physics! Their habit of turning over stones isn't just random; they are specifically looking for leatherjackets (crane fly larvae) and beetles that hide in the damp soil underneath.
Gear Used:
Camera: Canon EOS R7
Lens: Canon RF 200-800mm f/6.3-9 IS USM
Location: The Rushy Hide, WWT Slimbridge, Gloucestershire
