How we’ve reduced storm overflows and flooding | Hampshire Pathfinder Project Update
Back in 2023, we launched our Pathfinder Projects, small, local trials designed to find smarter and more sustainable ways to reduce storm overflow releases and tackle flooding.
Two years on, the Pan Parishes Pathfinder has wrapped up, and the results are already making a real difference. Working closely with residents we’ve:
Sealed 300+ private pipes connected to homes and businesses
Repaired and sealed 2km of sewers across the network
Used innovative no-dig technology to cut noise, traffic and disruption
Installed slow-drain water butts, planters and soakaways to manage excess rainwater naturally
Before the project began, the area relied on 30 tankers a day to manage excess groundwater. Since completing the work, tanker use has dropped significantly, even during the wettest conditions.
This is a major step towards reducing storm overflows and protecting homes from flooding. And it’s only the beginning. Over the next five years, we’ll be taking what we’ve learned here and rolling it out to other communities across the county.
