Hier wunderbar aufgeführt vom JSB Ensemble unter der Leitung von Matthias Böhringer. Aufgenommen bei der Bachwoche Stuttgart 2023 der Internationalen Bachakademie Stuttgart. Auf dem Programm des Werkstattkonzerts I am 20. März 2023 im Konzertsaal der HMDK Stuttgart standen barocke Chorwerke aus Deutschland und Mittel- & Südamerika. Bach weltweit – der Wirkungsgrad der Musik Johann Sebastian Bachs umspannt Zeiten und Räume. Im international besetzten JSB-Ensemble finden sich daher verschiedenste Traditionen zusammen und bringen überraschende Musik zu Gehör.

About the work:
Another argument with the Christmas story, this one more allegorical, takes place in Manuel de Mesa’s setting of Sor Juana’s text Las Flores y las Estrellas. In this piece, originally scored for double choirs, violins, and basso continuo, the flowers and the stars argue about which are more reflected in the features of the baby Jesus and which of the two favors. Mesa was the maestro de capilla of the cathedral of La Plata, Bolivia (now Sucre). Like many cathedral musicians in these wealthy cities, he had access to the financial and personnel resources to stage large-scale ceremonial music that took full advantage of the cathedral’s acoustic and architectural magnificence.
