Today’s shave was done with a very special razor — “Shawn’s own” kamisori, a hand-forged blade made by a friend and given as a Christmas gift. It’s forge-welded from 1095 and 15N20 steel, his first attempt, and carries all the character you’d expect from a blade made by hand rather than machine.

I’ll admit to a bit of nervousness going in. The scale and presence reminded me of the first time moving from a familiar 5/8 razor to a great big Wade & Butcher — a moment where respect for the tool matters more than confidence. In the end, I’m not surprised I got a great shave.

Those final finishing strokes on the jasper stone brought the edge together beautifully. Despite a slight warp, the blade was sizzling sharp across its entire length, smooth and confident on the face. I paired it with Mitchell’s Wool Fat, whose cushion and slickness complemented the razor perfectly.

This shave wasn’t about perfection — it was about trust, patience, and learning how a blade wants to be used. More than anything, it was a reminder that some tools carry value far beyond performance.
