Erik, the Asian Movie Enthusiast presents:
A review of “Black Coal, Thin Ice”, a Chinese dramatic thriller from 2014.
During the late 90s, the dismembered parts of a human body appear in shipments of coal in different cities. Detective Zhang is assigned to investigate. He and his partners go to interview a potential suspect and his brother. After a tragic altercation, the detectives return the ashes of the suspect to his widow Wu (played by Kwai Lun-mei), a young woman who works at a small laundry service.
By 2004, Zhang has quit the police force and become a security guard, having been traumatized by the prior events. During a chance encounter with his old partner, Zhang learns that two additional murders have happened with the same M.O., both victims had dated Wu at some point in the past, and both victims were wearing ice skates when they were killed. Zhang decides to help solve the case.
This is an atmospheric, slow-burn thriller.
