As of 2006, 137 pyramids have been discovered in Egypt. [1] [2] Most of these were built as tombs for them and their wives during the reigns of the ancient and medieval pharaohs. [3] [4]

The oldest pyramids in Egypt were discovered at Sakkara, northwest of Memphis. The oldest of these is the Pyramid of Josar, built during the reign of the Third Dynasty (2730-2811 BC). Architect Imhotep designed this pyramid and the pyramid-adjacent courtyard. It is generally considered to be the oldest smooth stone structure in the world.

The most famous of the Egyptian pyramids can be seen in Giza on the outskirts of Cairo. Several of Giza's installations are considered to be one of the largest in the world. [5]

The Khufur Pyramid in Giza is the largest of the Egyptian pyramids. It is the only one of the seven wonders of the ancient world to date.
