There are several options for minimizing water use in the landscape, depending on whether the plants are already there or if you can redesign the landscape.
With existing plants, reducing water is the simplest method. Minimum irrigation refers to the lowest amount of water that a tree could be given without affecting its function and looks. It’s important to transition a tree slowly so it doesn’t become drought stressed, e.g. if you suddenly stop watering a lawn.
If you can change the source of the irrigation water, like using graywater, well water, or reclaimed water, dissolved salts and metals may be a concern. If there are sensitive trees, avoid this option because the trees could be severely damaged.
If the landscape can be redone, it should be divided up into hydrozones - sections of the landscape with similar water needs so that a single program or controller can manage the irrigation.
Xeriscaping is also gaining popularity - it is an approach to landscaping that uses low to no-water plants to reduce landscape water use. The type of plants should be appropriate to the local climate.
