Tres Hombres is a 32-meter brigantine / motor-less sailing cargo ship, originally built in 1943 (as a German “KFK” naval vessel) and restored by Fairtransport between 2007 and 2009.
Since 2009 she sails (mostly across the Atlantic) using only wind power — no engine — carrying goods between Europe and the Americas (or the Caribbean).
What she transports
Her cargo tends to be sustainably / fairly produced goods: e.g. coffee, cacao, rum, olive oil, wine — products that match the ethos of ethical and low-impact trade.
The freight capacity is modest: up to about 40 tonnes (≈ 35–40 t, some sources 35 t) per voyage.
What is Fairtransport’s “Mission Zero” concept
Fairtransport was founded by a small group of sailing- and climate-conscious people in 2007, aiming to create a zero-emissions cargo-shipping model based on sail alone.
With Tres Hombres — and later additional sail-ships — they want to demonstrate that maritime freight without fossil fuels is possible, offering an alternative to modern container ships that cause heavy CO₂ emissions and pollution.
The mission is not just about transport: it’s also about ethical, sustainable supply-chains — by transporting organic / fairly traded goods, they connect producers and consumers more consciously.
