In this three-part special, we're sitting down with pop music icon Darren Hayes to talk about his stunning new autobiography, 'Unlovable'.
As lead singer and songwriter of Savage Garden and iconic solo artist, Darren Hayes has sold over 30 million albums, achieved two US Billboard number one singles, won 14 ARIAs, 10 APRA songwriting awards and in 2019 received an award in the Order of Australia by the late Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II for services to the music industry.
Darren has performed at the Royal Albert Hall, Sydney Opera House and Radio City Music Hall. He has duetted with Pavarotti, appeared at the closing ceremony of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and twice headlined the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.
On this second part of our chat, Darren takes us through how Savage Garden broke big in America, and then details their bitter end.
And yes, we go there: the homophobic music industry politics he faced as a pop star - both in and out of the closet. His insider view at the way his record label treated Ricky Martin and George Michael, and what it really meant for Darren to go solo.
Follow us on Instagram @90sGAY and be sure to subscribe for the next episode where we ask Darren about singing pro-gay lyrics on stage at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, and his experience headlining Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras twice: once while in the closet and once as a free man.
