Terror groups linked to al-Qaeda and ISIS are dramatically escalating violence across the remote border region connecting Niger, Benin, and Nigeria. What were once quiet smuggling and transit routes are now turning into active conflict corridors.
According to a new report by the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data project, attacks by Islamist militant groups in the tri-border zone surged by nearly 90 percent between 2024 and 2025. The human toll has risen even faster — with fatalities more than doubling to over 1,000 as extremist operations intensify.
