The Hradecky Bridge (Slovene: Hradeckega most) in Ljubljana.
Historical Highlights.
Built in 1867, the Hradecky Bridge is the first cast‑iron bridge in Ljubljana and the only preserved one in Slovenia, and among the earliest hinged‑arch bridges worldwide.
Designed by Viennese engineer Johann Hermann, its span (≈ 30 m) was cast in Dvor near Žužemberk and its ribbed modular arch design—with bolted joints and hollow elements—made it both light and structurally advanced for its time.
Name & Relocations.
The bridge was named after Mayor Johann Nepomuk Hradeczky (mayor 1820–1846), credited with its inception.
Originally placed at the site of today’s Cobblers’ Bridge in 1867, it replaced a wooden predecessor. In 1931, architect Jože Plečnik moved it near the city mortuary, earning it the nickname “Mortuary Bridge” (Mrtvaški most) as it was used to transfer the deceased at night.
Closed to motor traffic in 2004, it was restored in 2010 and in 2011 relocated to its current position, between the Krakovo and Grudnovo embankments, reverting to its original name Hradeckega most and serving exclusively as a pedestrian and cycling bridge.
Current Structure & Location.
It connects Hrenova Street in the Trnovo District with the Prule neighbourhood in Ljubljana’s Centre District over the Ljubljanica River.
The bridge features three articulated arches, each composed of two bolted sections at the apex. Its width is approximately 6.4 m.
Technical & Cultural Significance.
Considered one of Slovenia’s most valuable technical landmarks, it outclasses England’s Ironbridge in engineering through use of screws, hollow structural elements, and reinforced bars—making it lighter yet robust.
Its remarkable durability allowed it to be moved three times without losing its character and it remains a symbol of Ljubljana’s rich architectural heritage.
Visiting Tips.
Situated in a charming, less touristy stretch of the Ljubljanica riverside, the bridge is ideal for a scenic walk from the city centre toward Trnovo or Krakovo, known for quaint houses and vineyards.
Nearby landmarks include Plečnik’s Trnovo Church, the National and University Library, and Ljubljana Castle, all within a short stroll.
With its elegant form, fascinating history of relocation, and engineering innovations, the Hradecky Bridge remains one of Ljubljana’s most cherished urban treasures—perfect for architecture lovers, history buffs, or anyone enjoying riverside ambiance.
