Recently U.S. regulators, have granted permission for certain autonomous vehicle companies to start deploying low-speed electric delivery vehicles (Delivery Robots)
Worldwide people spend a lot of their time running errands, autonomous delivery vehicles enable a future where everything comes to you directly on-demand.
It is estimated that food & grocery delivery revenue is set to grow steadily and reach $200 billion by 2025.
Many leading retailers have begun field testing of delivery BOT’s including: Walmart, Kroger, Stop & Shop FedEx AutoZone, Lowe’s, Pizza Hut, Target, and Walgreens.
FedEx “SameDay” Bot, is being tested and refined, it is designed to deliver goods that FedEx traditionally doesn’t deliver, such as pizza, auto parts and prescriptions.
Delivery BOTS can be categorized into a few distinct categories:
-Drones, delivering packages by air,
-Last-mile robots, that roam sidewalks and deliver to homes or apartments
-Autonomous cars, for the road as well as unique compact robot-like vans
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic small sidewalk robots were gaining traction, in general these sidewalk robots move slowly are light-weight and do not present a risk to pedestrians.
In today’s current environment there's clear appeal to less human-involved food delivery.
Delivery BOTs won't eliminate human-driven food delivery but it’s clearly a growth trend for the future and as the market continues to expand we will see bigger and faster Delivery BOT’s that can reach customers in many suburban and rural areas.
