As a part of the United Nation's Fourth Session of the Permanent Forum on People of African Descent, the Diversity Institute hosted a side event titled: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Human Rights for People of African Descent: A Time to Refocus.
The event was moderated by Dr. Jodi-Ann Francis, Regulated Canadian Immigration Consultant and featured; Dr. Wendy Cukier, Founder and Academic Director, Diversity Institute, Toronto Metropolitan University; Tamara Thermitus, Visiting Scholar, McGill Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism; and Dr. Rhonda N. McEwen, President and Vice-Chancellor of Victoria University in the University of Toronto.
With more than 250 live attendees, the webinar examined the current backlash against diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) policies, assessing their resilience and effectiveness in addressing systemic and intersectional racism. It examined whether a human rights framework could offer a stronger alternative to the DEI model, especially in light of shifting public opinion and organizational priorities since the global reckoning sparked by George Floyd’s murder.
