In early January 2026, a major bushfire—often referred to as the Walwa fire—ignited in the Mount Lawson State Park in north-east Victoria, near the New South Wales border. The fire became so intense that it generated its own weather, forming a pyrocumulonimbus cloud with lightning and thunder.
By mid-January, the fire had destroyed at least nine structures, over 580 hectares of farmland, and approximately 10,000 hectares of pine plantations. Residents in nearby towns were urged to leave immediately as the fire burned out of control. Mount Lawson State Park was closed to the public until further notice due to the ongoing threat.
