A fresh debate has emerged after Praveen Khandelwal suggested renaming Delhi to Indraprastha in a letter to Amit Shah.
Supporters say the name Indraprastha connects the capital to the ancient city described in the Mahabharata, believed by some to have existed near Purana Qila. Archaeological findings such as Painted Grey Ware pottery suggest ancient settlements in the region, but historians say there is no conclusive evidence proving the city was called Indraprastha.
The name “Delhi” has historical roots in “Dhillika,” linked to the Tomar Rajputs, and continued through the Delhi Sultanate, Mughal era, and British period.
