An Australian man has died while scuba diving off the shoreline of a popular Bali beach.

The man - identified in local media reports as Nathan John Scott - was diving about 150 metres off Segara Beach in Tulamben, eastern Bali, when the tragedy unfolded at about 11.30am (local time) on Tuesday.

Local authorities say witnesses reported the NSW man was diving at a depth of about 15m when he removed his breathing apparatus in a panicked state, then made a rapid ascent to the surface.

One of the two instructors with him noticed his distress and called to shore for help.

Mr Scott then reportedly fell unconscious and was rushed back to shore by fishermen.

The diver was taken to a medical facility but could not be saved.
