To replace the latch spring, arm yourself with a Phillips screwdriver, flare nut wrench or crescent wrench, and a needle-nose plier. Crucially, relieve any existing tension in the reel to prevent accidents.

Begin by pulling out two to three feet of hose, allowing the reel to latch. Remove the hose stopper using a Phillips screwdriver. Pull the hose back through the guide rollers, unlatch the reel, and let it retract until it stops, indicating no tension.

Using a wrench, remove the axle nut, detach the drum, and set it aside. Examine the latch spring on the base plate; if tension is lost, it's time for replacement.

To replace the latch spring, use a needle-nose plier to detach it from the base plate and latch pawl. If the latch pawl is worn, replace it by opening the nut on the opposite side of the base plate, disassembling the worn-out part, and fixing a new latch pawl.

Assemble the reel by sliding the base plate through the axle on the drum, securing it with a washer and nut. Add pre-tension by rotating the reel drum four to five times in the direction it operates during normal hose retrieval.
