The Johatsu phenomenon has been occurring in Japan for decades. It began to gain attention in the 1960s, when the Japanese economy was booming. At that time, people experiencing financial failure, personal or social problems felt ashamed to return to their families or communities.

This strong social pressure within Japanese society led them to choose to disappear. This phenomenon has continued to grow as social standards in Japan have improved. Failure is considered unacceptable, both in work and personal relationships. Consequently, this phenomenon has become increasingly common and is known as johatsu.
