A rare and controversial moment unfolded at the White House when Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado handed her Nobel Peace Prize medal to U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump accepted the medal publicly, calling it a “gesture of mutual respect,” reigniting debate over his long-expressed desire for the prestigious honour.
This marked the first time in history that a Nobel Peace Prize laureate voluntarily handed over their medal to another individual. However, the Norwegian Nobel Institute quickly clarified that Nobel Prizes cannot be transferred, shared, or revoked under any circumstances. According to the statutes of the Nobel Foundation, once awarded, a Nobel Prize is final and permanently belongs to the original laureate.
