Attention South Carolina Motorists: Beginning September 1, it will be against the law to drive with a cellphone in your hand in South Carolina. The new Hands-Free Driving Act also prohibits drivers from keeping a phone in their lap while operating a vehicle. Hands-free and voice-activated devices like Bluetooth are allowed. The new law prohibits drivers from holding their phone while driving, even at stoplights. You may only handle your phone if your vehicle is in park.
Key Points to Know:
• Grace Period: Sept. 1 – Feb. 28 → Officers will issue warnings only.
• Tickets Begin: March 1 → Violations will be enforced.
For the first offense, drivers will receive a $100 fine. For the second offense, drivers will receive a $200 fine and possible points on their driving record.
Do your part to keep our roads safe—put the phone down and drive hands-free.
