On October 14, 2026, the Social Security Administration announced a 3.6% cost-of-living adjustment for 2027: about $75 more a month for the average retired worker. In the same weeks, the program's own trustees were pointing to late 2032, when the retirement trust fund is projected to run out and checks would be cut to about 78% of what was promised.
This video puts both numbers side by side. How the raise is calculated (and why gas prices drove it), why the formula is built around workers rather than retirees, how Medicare premiums and an old tax line eat into it, and what a 22% cut would mean for an average check. It also looks back at the 1983 fix signed by President Reagan, and at what the Social Security commissioner said on CNBC this week.
The $477 figure is a calculation: a 22% cut applied to an average check of about $2,170 after the 2027 raise.
