The Epiphany of Our Lord Jesus Christ is one of the oldest feasts of the Catholic Church. It celebrates the manifestation of Jesus as Lord and Saviour of the whole world. The word Epiphany comes from a Greek term meaning “to reveal,” and this feast proclaims that Christ is made known not only to the people of Israel but to all nations and all peoples. From the earliest centuries, the Church has rejoiced in this great mystery: that God has revealed His only Son as the Light of the world.

At the heart of the Epiphany is the adoration of the Magi, who were guided by a star to seek and worship the newborn King. Their journey represents the Gentile world’s search for truth, and their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh reveal who Jesus truly is—King, God, and Saviour. In their humble homage, we see the fulfilment of God’s promise that all people would be drawn to Christ and find salvation through Him.

The Church also recalls other moments closely associated with The Epiphany, particularly the Baptism of the Lord and the Wedding at Cana, when Jesus’ divine identity was revealed more fully. For this reason, Epiphany is also known as Theophany, meaning the manifestation of God to humanity. These events proclaim that Jesus is the beloved Son of the Father, filled with the power of the Holy Spirit, and the One through whom God’s glory is revealed to the world.

The Epiphany calls every believer to respond to Christ’s light just as the Magi did—with faith, obedience, and worship. It reminds us that Jesus came to overcome the darkness of sin, to lead humanity to the Father, and to offer eternal life. As Christ is revealed to the world, we too are invited to follow Him, to offer our lives in loving surrender, and to become reflections of His light so that others may be drawn to Him.
